Web Copywriter (Contract)
Role & Responsibilities
HAUS is seeking an experienced freelance Web Copywriter. The ideal person will be responsible for the following:
- Lead Web Copy for Deep Tech Startups: Own the writing for HAUS client websites, from homepage narrative through product, technology, about, and everything else that sits on a modern startup site. This is the core of the work — website launches and refreshes for venture-backed B2B tech companies whose story needs to land clearly and compellingly the moment a visitor hits the page.
- Think Strategically About How the Story Unfolds on the Page: Web copy is architecture, not just words. You'll help the HAUS team decide what promise the site is making, how that promise sequences across pages, what belongs above the fold versus deeper in, and how the argument builds from first impression to the moment a visitor decides to reach out. You're not waiting for a messaging framework to hand you a brief. You're helping shape the framework itself, and you're expected to bring a point of view about how the story should be told, not just execute against a direction someone else set.
- Translate Complex Science and Engineering Into Clear, Persuasive Copy: Our clients are building genuinely hard technology in AI, robotics, biotech, aerospace, and adjacent fields. You'll turn dense technical concepts into copy that lands with investors, customers, and talent without dumbing anything down or drifting into generic tech buzzwords. Precision is what earns credibility with the audiences these companies need to reach, and cliché is what loses it.
- Editorial Thinking on Narrative and Positioning: Work closely with HAUS brand strategists, art directors, and designers to figure out what the story actually is before writing a word. You don't just style what you're handed. You push back when a proposed narrative direction won't land, when the positioning is too generic to differentiate the client, or when the copy is fighting the visual design instead of reinforcing it.
- Establish Voice and Consistency Across the Full Site: A website isn't a collection of independent pages. You'll write in a way that establishes consistent voice, terminology, and cadence across every surface of a client's site, so the whole thing reads like it came from one confident company rather than a stitched-together set of drafts from different hands.
- Occasional Adjacent Copy When It Serves the Web Work: Web is the focus, but on occasion a project may pull in adjacent materials that live in the same narrative universe as the site — a pitch deck, a launch one-pager, an announcement. When this happens, the work should feel like a natural extension of the web voice, not a separate exercise.
Requirements
- Passion for Deep Tech: You must love deep tech and be genuinely excited by cutting-edge technologies.
- Portfolio & Experience: Professional copywriting experience with a substantial body of web copy work for B2B technology companies, ideally venture-backed startups or emerging tech. Your portfolio must include full website launches you owned or led — not just headlines, and not just campaigns — showing how you built narrative across an entire site rather than just writing lines in isolation.
- Strategic Web Thinking: Demonstrated ability to think about web copy at the architecture level, not just the sentence level. You understand how homepage narrative differs from product pages, how information sequences across a site, and how copy shapes what a visitor believes about a company in the first thirty seconds. You can articulate a copy strategy in a working session with strategists and designers, not just execute one after it's been decided.
- Translating Technical Depth Into Clear Copy: Genuine comfort with complex science and engineering, and a track record of turning it into copy that lands with non-expert audiences without losing precision. You can read a founder's technical whitepaper or a research paper and pull the sharpest, most compelling story out of it.
- Editorial Craft: Excellent writing fundamentals — voice, rhythm, structure, and the discipline to cut. You write copy that sounds like a confident human wrote it, not copy that sounds like it was generated. You know when a line is working and when it's filler dressed up as prose.
- Attention to Detail: Precision matters. Typos, awkward transitions, inconsistent terminology, and buzzword drift undermine the credibility of an entire site. You take pride in copy that holds up on the first scan, the second read, and the deep dive from a technical audience.
- Communication & Teamwork: Excellent communication skills. You can walk HAUS brand strategists, art directors, designers, and creative directors through the reasoning behind your copy decisions, take feedback without ego, and hand work off cleanly so the team can carry it forward into client conversations. Since our team is distributed, you need to be comfortable working remotely, collaborating via Slack and Zoom, and proactively communicating status and blockers.
- Tech Savvy & Curiosity: A genuine passion for technology and innovation is important. Our clients are building world-changing tech in AI, robotics, biotech, aerospace, and more. Your enthusiasm for these domains will help you write about them with the depth and specificity they deserve.
Preferences
Familiarity with conversion copywriting principles and how web copy supports B2B sales cycles is a plus. Experience translating academic research or scientific papers into commercial narrative will help your work stand out. Any prior work in aerospace, defense, robotics, semiconductors, biotech, climate, energy, or other deep tech verticals will help you understand our clients faster.
