Storyboard Artist (Contract)
Role & Responsibilities
HAUS is seeking an experienced freelance Storyboard Artist. The ideal person will be responsible for the following:
- Translate Scripts and Concepts into Visual Sequences: Take approved scripts, creative briefs, and director direction and translate them into shot-by-shot storyboards that communicate camera angle, composition, action, and pacing. Your boards become the anchor document that guides everything downstream, from 3D animation and camera choreography to editing decisions and final delivery.
- Design Shots for Deep Tech Subjects: Storyboard products, systems, and technologies that most audiences have never seen before, from rocket motors and hybrid engines to autonomous robots, satellites, semiconductors, and medical devices. You'll figure out how to visualize technical concepts clearly through composition and camera work, often working from CAD exports, technical references, or engineering diagrams supplied by client engineering teams.
- Build Animatics for Timing and Pacing: Where the project calls for it, assemble your boards into animatics with rough timing, basic edits, camera moves suggested through pans and zooms, and rough voice over or sound sync. Animatics let directors and clients feel the pacing of the piece before animation begins, catching structural issues early when they're cheap to fix.
- Iterate Through Board Revisions: Deliver first-pass thumbnails, refined boards, and final revisions on aggressive timelines. Boards are living documents. Scripts change, directors try alternate approaches, and clients weigh in with feedback. You handle revision cycles cleanly, preserve what's working, and adjust what isn't without letting version confusion slow the project down.
- Collaborate with Directors, Animators, and the Creative Team: Work closely with art directors, 3D animators, and copywriters throughout the storyboarding process to ensure your boards align with the visual direction and give the animation team a clear roadmap. You participate actively in creative reviews and can defend or reconsider choices based on discussion.
- Communicate Cinematic Intent Clearly: Your boards need to be readable by 3D animators, editors, and clients who may not be trained in film language. That means clear composition, obvious camera direction, and enough visual detail to communicate intent without over-rendering panels that will need to change. Knowing how much to draw and how much to leave loose is part of the craft.
Requirements
- Passion for Deep Tech: You must love deep tech and be genuinely excited by cutting-edge technologies.
- Portfolio & Experience: Professional experience storyboarding for commercial, live-action, animation, or motion design work. Your portfolio must demonstrate strong sequential storytelling with clear cinematic intent. Standalone illustration or concept art, however beautiful, is not the same skill and is not what we're hiring for.
- Technical Proficiency: Expert-level work in Storyboard Pro, Photoshop, Procreate, or an equivalent industry-standard package. Comfortable working digitally on tablet or Cintiq, and able to deliver clean boards and rough thumbnails at whatever fidelity a given project needs.
- Cinematography and Shot Design: Strong understanding of shot types, camera angles, framing, and staging. You design shots that communicate story and information clearly, and you know when to reach for a wide, when to push in for a close, and when to break with convention purposefully.
- Drawing Skills: Strong figure and object drawing fundamentals. You can render complex mechanical and industrial subjects with enough clarity to communicate composition and action, even at thumbnail scale. You draw quickly and loosely at early stages, then tighten selectively as boards move toward approval.
- Working from Scripts: Comfort taking a written script or concept and translating it into visual sequence. You identify the beats, moments, and transitions that matter, and you build a board sequence that serves the pacing and rhythm of the finished piece.
- Animatic Development: Ability to assemble your boards into rough animatics with timing, basic edits, and suggested camera moves. Familiarity with Premiere, After Effects, Storyboard Pro's built-in animatic tools, or equivalent software is required for this role.
- Speed and Iteration: You work fast without sacrificing clarity. Storyboarding is a discipline of rapid ideation, and you can produce multiple thumbnail options in a day and iterate through director feedback without slowing the project down.
- Pipeline Awareness: Understanding of where your work sits in the broader production pipeline, including how boards are used by 3D animators, editors, and directors downstream. You board in a way that supports the whole team, not just your own step.
- Communication & Teamwork: Excellent communication skills. You can talk to directors about story and staging, to animators about specific camera moves and action, and to clients about what your boards represent versus what's still open for interpretation. Since our team is distributed, you need to be comfortable working remotely, collaborating via Slack and Zoom, and proactively communicating status and blockers.
- Tech Savvy & Curiosity: A genuine passion for technology and innovation is important. Our clients are building world-changing tech in AI, robotics, biotech, aerospace, and more. Your enthusiasm for these domains will help you visualize technologies you may not have seen before with the clarity they deserve.
- Bonus Skills: Prior experience in commercial or animated video production is a plus, especially work involving product, industrial, or mechanical subjects. Previz experience or familiarity with rough 3D layout tools (Blender, Cinema 4D, Frame Forge) will help you communicate camera work more precisely. Any prior work in aerospace, defense, robotics, semiconductors, medical devices, or industrial visualization will help you understand our clients faster.
