Data Visualization Designer (Contract)
Role & Responsibilities
HAUS is seeking an experienced freelance Data Visualization Designer. The ideal person will be responsible for the following:
- Design Data Visualizations Across Formats and Contexts: Create static and interactive data visualizations across investor decks, technical reports, websites, whitepapers, case studies, and social content. Your work translates client performance data, technical specifications, market benchmarks, and research findings into visualizations that inform, persuade, and clarify complex information for the audiences our clients need to reach.
- Design Custom Visualizations for Complex Deep Tech Data: Move beyond standard chart types when the data calls for it. Deep tech clients regularly deal with complex, multidimensional information, including performance curves, capability comparisons, process flows, network graphs, spatial data, and specialized technical metrics that off-the-shelf chart libraries can't handle well. You design custom visualizations from first principles when standard forms would fail the data.
- Editorial Thinking on Data Storytelling: Work with copywriters, art directors, and client subject matter experts to figure out what the data actually says and how to frame it visually. You don't just chart numbers. You design a visual narrative that supports the argument the piece needs to make, and you push back when a proposed chart type would mislead the audience or bury the point.
- Interactive and Animated Visualizations: Design and prototype interactive data experiences for web and animated data reveals for video. This includes scroll-triggered data storytelling, interactive explorations for websites and client-facing tools, and animated chart sequences that coordinate with motion design work in hero videos and product explainers.
- Build Reusable Visualization Systems: Where clients have recurring data needs such as quarterly investor updates, ongoing performance reports, or product benchmark comparisons, design templated or modular visualization systems that let client teams generate consistent visualizations on their own after handoff. Your systems should extend brand identity into data contexts without losing rigor or clarity.
- Ensure Accuracy and Rigor: Deep tech clients care about the data as much as the design. Get numbers right, use appropriate scales, avoid misleading visualizations, and coordinate with client subject matter experts to validate technical accuracy before publication. A beautifully designed chart with the wrong data on it does more damage than good.
Requirements
- Passion for Deep Tech: You must love deep tech and be genuinely excited by cutting-edge technologies.
- Portfolio & Experience: Professional experience designing data visualizations for editorial, brand, product, research, or journalism contexts. Your portfolio must demonstrate both static and interactive work, and must show real data visualization thinking, not just polished dashboards or chart-heavy decks that could be produced in any BI tool.
- Technical Proficiency: Expert-level Figma and Illustrator for design work, and proficiency in D3.js, Observable, or equivalent tools for prototyping interactive and custom visualizations. Familiarity with After Effects for animated viz, Lottie for web-ready animation, and production tools like Tableau, Flourish, or Datawrapper for high-volume workflows.
- Design Fundamentals: Strong grounding in graphic design. You understand type systems, color theory (including perceptually uniform color scales), layout, hierarchy, and composition, and you can design a visualization from scratch, not just apply a template. Comfort designing within established brand systems while extending them into data contexts.
- Data Literacy and Editorial Thinking: Genuine comfort with data, statistics, and quantitative reasoning. You understand which chart types serve which questions, when a log scale is appropriate, why misleading axes matter, and how to interrogate data before designing anything. You can identify the story in a dataset and design toward it, and you can spot when the story you're being asked to tell isn't actually supported by the numbers.
- Custom Visualization Skills: Demonstrated ability to design custom visualizations when off-the-shelf chart types don't fit the data. You know the standard forms cold (bar, line, scatter, small multiples, sankey, chord, network) and can go beyond them when the data or the argument calls for something purpose-built.
- Interactive and Web Delivery: Experience producing data visualizations optimized for web contexts, including interactive prototypes, scroll-triggered data narratives, and responsive designs that work across desktop and mobile. Understanding of how visualization assets integrate with modern web platforms and the performance constraints that apply.
- Data Manipulation: Comfort working with raw and messy data. You can clean, reshape, and analyze data in tools like Google Sheets, Excel, Python (pandas), R, or SQL as needed to prepare it for visualization, rather than requiring everything to arrive perfectly formatted.
- Attention to Detail: Precision matters. Wrong axis labels, misleading scales, and inaccurate data undermine the credibility of an entire piece. You take pride in visualizations that hold up to scrutiny from the subject matter experts who supplied the data.
- Communication & Teamwork: Excellent communication skills. You can talk to designers about visual intent, to copywriters about the argument the data supports, and to client engineers and analysts about what the data actually shows. Since our team is distributed, you need to be comfortable working remotely, collaborating via Slack and Zoom, and proactively communicating status and blockers.
- Tech Savvy & Curiosity: A genuine passion for technology and innovation is important. Our clients are building world-changing tech in AI, robotics, biotech, aerospace, and more. Your enthusiasm for these domains will help you visualize their data with the clarity and rigor it deserves.
- Bonus Skills: Experience with three.js or WebGL for 3D data visualization is a plus. Familiarity with Rive for interactive motion, Cavalry for procedural design, or GIS tools (Mapbox, QGIS) for spatial data will help your work stand out. Any prior work in aerospace, defense, robotics, semiconductors, medical devices, climate, energy, or industrial visualization will help you understand our clients faster.
